Lisa Casey, DO, Program Director

Lisa Casey, DO, is Program Director at the University of Minnesota Duluth Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Casey attended the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio, and completed her residency in Sandusky, Ohio, at Firelands Regional Health Center. Her first job was as teaching faculty at St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency in Toledo, Ohio, and she has been teaching in family medicine residencies in Ohio or Pennsylvania since then. In her position before coming to the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program, she was privileged to be the founding program director of a family medicine residency in Lima, Ohio.

When not teaching, she loves hiking, camping and traveling with her husband and especially loves going to visit her son, daughter, and son-in-law.

Jay Allen, MD

Jay Allen, MD, is faculty at the University of Minnesota Duluth Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Jay Allen is a full-spectrum family medicine physician who supervises obstetrical, inpatient, and outpatient resident encounters. He has a split position with his own clinic and the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program. His clinical interests include obstetrics, point-of-care ultrasound and patient-centered decision-making.

Mary (Daisy) Braaten, MD

Mary Braaten, MD, is faculty at the University of Minnesota Duluth Family Medicine Residency. She grew up on the South Side of Chicago and attended Northwestern University Medical School. She completed her residency at the West Suburban Family Practice Residency, serving the West Side of Chicago.

Braaten first practiced at Family Practice Community Wellness Center, serving an inner-city Latino population. She completed a faculty development fellowship at Cook County Hospital and taught with the St. Elizabeth Family Practice Residency. After 6 years she and her family moved to Northern Minnesota where she joined a rural practice in Deer River, working part-time.

After working in Deer River for ten years, Braaten joined the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program as faculty in 2013 and she continues to do some rural ER work.

Lauren Giammar, MD

Dr. Giammar joined the Duluth Family Medicine Residency program in April of 2019. She had been practicing full scope family medicine in Superior, Wisconsin prior to this. Her first job after completing her residency at the University of Minnesota North Memorial program in 2005 was with Fairview. She practiced full scope family medicine in Apple Valley, MN, until 2009, when she joined as faculty at North Memorial. She remained core faculty at North Memorial’s residency program until 2015, when her family relocated to the twin ports.  Her medical interests include prenatal care, obstetrics, women’s health and adolescent medicine.

Jennifer Jones, MD

Jennifer Jones, MD, is faculty at the University of Minnesota Duluth Family Medicine Residency. Her practice experience includes full spectrum family medicine and outpatient medicine. She is interested in preventive care and patient education.  Dr. Jones is a trained child abuse examiner (according to National Children’s Alliance standards) and end-of-life decision making instructor (certified Respecting Choices: Shared Decision Making in Serious Illness instructor.

Danielle MacDonald, PharmD

Danielle MacDonald, Pharm.D., BCACP received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy–Duluth in 2007. She then completed an ambulatory care pharmacy practice residency with the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in 2007-2008. After residency, she practiced both clinic and community pharmacy-based care in an independent health system. She currently practices at three family medicine clinics in Duluth: the Duluth Family Medicine Clinic and the Essentia Health Lakewalk and Lakeside Clinics where she provides comprehensive medication management services. Her professional interests include optimizing disease management services, nurturing interprofessional collaboration, providing practice-based education, and participating in quality improvement and practice-based research. Her personal interests include spending time with family and friends, enjoying music, and spending time outdoors – skiing, hiking, and mountain biking.

Jason Wall, MD

Jason Wall, MD, is faculty at the University of Minnesota Duluth Family Medicine Residency. Previously, he practiced at HealthEast Salud Integral Clinic in St. Paul.  Dr. Wall has a long standing fascination with all things Minnesota. He was raised in Woodstock, Illinois, attended St. Olaf College and graduated from the Chicago Medical School in 2003. Returning to Minnesota for residency, he is a 2006 graduate of the Duluth program. Coming full circle, he returned to Duluth where he worked in urgent care until joining the faculty in 2011. His interests include underserved populations and medical education.

 

John Wood, MD

John Wood, MD, is faculty at the University of Minnesota Duluth Family Medicine Residency. His practice experience includes full spectrum family medicine at Sawtooth Mountain Clinic in Grand Marais, Minnesota, and emergency medicine in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.  His medical interests include rural emergency care, geriatrics, mental health, international medicine

 

Ann Yapel, PharmD, BCACP

Ann currently practices ambulatory clinical pharmacy at both the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Clinic and Essentia Health Lakeside Family Practice Clinic. In this role the pharmacist provides Comprehensive Medication Management Services primarily by direct patient care encounters. Other responsibilities include participation in a health care team, providing education to medical providers and ancillary staff as well as precepting both students and residents. Ann feels strongly that educating patients enhances their medication experience and medical care overall.  Her medical interests include comprehensive medication management, medication management of chronic disease states through collaborative practice agreements and opioid tapering.
